Use your bridge pickup and turn the tone knob to the treble setting on the guitar. This song uses a lot of palm muting at particular times as well as downstrokes. The thing is, Billy Joe uses half and/or full stacks. Your amp will not emulate that full sound as well as his. You should be ok with using the amps distortion. Really try working on your technique. Once you have that down, play around with the amp settings. Normally guitars turn up the mids and turn the bass and treble down, but if you are trying to play this by yourself on a smaller amp, you may want to turn the bass up a little, maybe to around 4 or 5. Keep the mids around 5, and treble around 3 or 4. A little reverb would help as well.
