Deistic Directives™: Do the 10 Commandments go far enough?
Can you think of any additions to the list that might have been a good idea?
If I was this God character, I would've told Moses to actually write nothing. If this God character is so all-powerful he would have seen that, in the modern age:
1. "Do not worship any other gods" - that failed as soon as it was written. You can't walk into any large city without seeing people of other faiths who follow different gods to the Christian god. Also, by the time the commandments were written, at least half of the world already had their own religion which was Christianity. So .. yeah .. not very important now. This kind of commandment causes unneeded wars.
2. "Do not make any idols" - true, people shouldn't idolise money but people have celebrity role models and many folks don't see God as their role-model even more. For one thing, She's not physical and can't do much good except let Her followers say a few angry words. Once again, this commandment is now useless and not needed.
3. "Do not misuse the name of God" - well, people do now and it has come to the point where they can't help it and it's as natural as saying 'the' or 'I'. Useless.
4. "Keep the Sabbath day holy" - a lot of people have weekend jobs and, even though shops tend to close early on this day, it can't be helped that people work on the Sabbath day as well. In most religions, it's not technically a holiday for all. Except for some religions, it's useless.
5. "Honour your father and mother" - actually, this is one of the only commandments that DO make sense in the modern world however if your parents did something extremely bad to the child, then undoubtedly the child will not 'honour' them. Not strictly useless, but it can be broken as easily as shredding paper.
6---->9. Well, these are basic laws in every society anyway so the commandments here are obvious and we don't need to told to not murder, or have affairs, or whatever. Sure, they were probably needed then, but not now so people should forget that they were commandments since we already have them as laws set down by our governments.
10. "Do not covet" - this CANNOT be helped; it's human to want your neighbour's possession. If people don't act upon it, we do not need to be told this therefore making this commandment useless today.
So, to answer your question, they DO go far enough but no one needs the commandments anymore.
