Have you ever...?
Have you ever read the opening pages of a book, and been amazed by the amount of thought the author put into them?
A few (very few) books I've read make such an impact in the beginning; it's really clear that the author kept going back and polishing the introduction until it was perfect.
***What books/poems stunned you right from the first sentence?***
A few of mine:
The Picture of Dorian Grey (Oscar Wilde)
A Tale of Two Cities (Charles Dickens)
Kushiel's Dart (Jacqueline Carey)
White Fang (Jack London)
The Little Prince (Antoine de Saint-Exupery)
Emergence (David Palmer)
Yes, absolutely. I agree with your choices (I must admit, however, that I don't know a couple of them), especially A Tale of Two Cities. It's just beautiful. So is the very ending of that one. Oscar Wilde is always wonderful.
I love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, too. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters." It sets up the book perfectly.
I also love the beginning of David Copperfield. Even the title of the first chapter is perfect: I Am Born. "Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o'clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously."
I also love the beginning of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: "Last Night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." I am not exactly sure why this one strikes me so much, but it does.
Another beginning I love is from Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. Here goes:
"My name is Odd Thomas, though in this age when fame is the altar at which most people worship, I am not sure why you should care who I am or that I exist." It goes on beautifully, too.
Isn't it wonderful to have so many books from which to choose?
